Just takes time. Soon they will not want to be apart! You were right about that! Things have progressed very nicely the last few days. Dutchess has sweetened up with Striker quite alot. They spend their time nibbling the same grass. They look like High School sweethearts sipping thru straws on the same milkshake. Neck "mutual-muzzle-rubs" are the norm. In fact Striker works himself in the middle of Dutchess and Emma and can sometimes parlay that into a massage with one girl working on each shoulder! So, oh yeah, I think he is fine with the new girls! As a matter of fact, I would be suprised that when the adoption papers come thru Striker hasn't added his hoof print stamp of approval next to our signatures. Striker is on board with this program! The girls also met the neighbor horses yesterday from across the fence. Everyone was very well mannered. Ears were perked and heads were high...very glamorous for such young girls. The neighbor geldings were admiring the girls but Striker was standing there right next to them with a very proud but protective look on his face. Ok the look was more like: "um, yeah... MINE!" Dutchess was happy to look pretty up front next to the fence showing off for the neighbor boys while Emma coyly peered from behind Dutchess over her shoulder. It was all very cute. It's all progressing very nicely for the girls here at Kea's Crest.

It would seem some new members of Kea's Crest have reached an important milestone today. On reflection over the last many months the difficulties encountered for these girls could be likened to hurdles in a steeple chase. With brave hearts they have jumped many blind hedges with the landing unknown. Sometimes they found on the other side a firm grass filled footing, others; a giant puddle filled with thrashing horses and riders who have fallen in their attempt. At points in the race they have passed some of their friends that will not finish. But with fear in their eye, a lucky horse shoe, and determination they have pushed thru and shown that character we so admire. There will be other challenges and races ahead but for today they can rest in the comfort of the rose blanket. Today is the day they made it to the "SAFE Horses - Home at Last" winners circle. Hooray! ;D Now, for this mornings photo: Emma, Dutchess, and Striker visit the neighbors across the fence. The air is moist from yesterdays rain and the morning sun perfumes the air as it warms the nearby lavender field. Aroma therapy.

Oh, btw, now the girls are laying out working on their tans again. No wonder the neighbor geldings are always standing by the fence trying to act cool.

Yes we have a truly "royal court" with Dutchess and Princess Emma. Striker deserved a royal title for his service to King and country so as King and Queen of Kea's Crest we have presented him his Knighthood and he is henceforth to be known as "Sir Striking Contrast." ;D Now they can all hang out without anyone worrying about titles.

Just a little update on how Dutchess is doing. Well,... great! ;D She is really maturing fast. She is already noticeably taller than when she came to us a month ago. She and Emma have totally settled in and are clearly comfortable with their new home. The complete softness returned to her eyes after about the second week we had her and she is just super eager to please us now. She has been super with the Parelli training "games" we have started and acts like she already knows some of them. It's pretty cute when Emma and Dutchess compete with one another to see who can be the next to get skritched with the Kerrit stick or have the rope gently slung around their legs or backs doing "friendly" games. I guess that makes it easier to move on to the more complex games. Probably the most noticeable change in Dutchess to me is her face. She is maturing into the fine long nose and facial features of a saddlebred. Her bottom teeth are distinct along her chin and she is shaping up to be a real star. Her hooves were trimmed recently and I feel real good about how she did considering how little experience she has had having a trim done. Add to that when it was done when she was first rescued it was probably a painful experience since they were so overgrown. She was a real trooper and, embarrassingly, was better behaved than our boy, Striker, who was supposed to be the one teaching them manners. Go figure. Anyway, all is going well for the girls and I'll probably add some new pictures next week.

Dutchess is doing so well. She is growing fast and both girls are holding a perfect "body score" while they are shooting up like bean sprouts. Dutchess is about 15.1hds and about 950lbs and Emma is about 14.1hds and 750lbs. I'm in Miami for work but Jan says their training session in the new round pen went excellent.
