I agree. I think JR is a well bred Quarter Horse. It would be terrific to get some history.

I got it back on him this morning while he was eating his grain. He was a little apprehensive about me putting it on the other day as well, and walked away from me several times, before finally deciding it was ok (but snorting at me a few times while I was doing it). He's a really sweet, kind horse, but he does have a few trust issues with new people (can you blame him?)

Yep, that's JR for you...he was that way with me at first, and it took a while to get his trust, but now he just lets me approach him, put his fly mask on, doesn't even blink an eye. Poor guy. The more he gets handled by unfamiliar friends the better. I do have to contribute part of his heathy shiny coat to TNT. I've had him on it since he came here, and I just LOVE the stuff!

JR is back with averyacres after a week-long vacation at the Schwung farm. He was such a joy to have around, I really enjoyed looking at these two old gentlemen every day. They also decided just about 2 days ago that they liked each other, after all, and they went from grazing at opposite ends of the pasture to side by side, mosying over to the water tub and taking turns drinking, and standing at the fence looking at me hopefully at feeding time. But the best is what I managed to catch them doing yesterday...here they are trying to escape the flies and the heat of the day by sharing the small shelter that is really not big enough for the both of them, but they made it work: He liked his vacation so much he didn't want to leave and refused to get in the trailer. We had to have a bit of an argument over it, but finally he realized I was serious and loaded up fine. Dobbin of course, jumped right in without hesitation.

They are just the cutest pair! I love Dobby and his old man nose. They stayed in the shelter together for quite a while and when one would walk out, the other would follow. JR would put his ears back at Dobby sometimes but never in a aggressive way - just being a grumpy old man! Does anybody have any info about JR's brand?

I looked in the oregon and washington brand books and never found an exact match...... Do you know what year the brand books were for? The branding iron that looked like JR's brand I saw at the flea market the person thought he had picked up at least a year or two ago. I'm not sure how often the brand books are updated in Washington and Oregon, but in some states they are updated yearly.

So I looked at a list of expired brands from B.C. Cattle and Horses and JR's brand is in there as registered to David and Chris Claypool. So maybe he came from Canada? Where could one get info on the persons that the brand was registered to?

My nephew came out over the weekend and was all too excited to ride. I was gone for most of the time he was here, so when he saw me arrive, I had a new friend following me everywhere-too sweet...so, seeing that JR is perfect for this kind of stuff, JR got to get out and take the kiddos (of course Micah had to show off for his big cousin) for a spin. Here are some pics from last Sunday. As you can see, Ke'von (my nephew) was cheesin' the whole time! Sorry the pictures are kind of blurry. Micah's turn. Here's Micah trying to tell me that he is going to lead JR all by himself... We finally came to an agreement! JR is so wonderful for this kind of stuff. Having a horse like this is just a gem in my opinion. He let the kids be all over him and never budged once in the cross ties, not even to rest his hind legs, and he is solid as a rock when it comes to leading the little ones around!
