Anyone here have experience with this? Is there any negative to at least trying (one gelding with unspecified origin intermittent lameness, another who was supposedly' a former endurance horse-good candidate for this to help if so)-what DOES it work for what "doesn't" it help with? I understand there is a "loading dose" period and then a maintenance period-how long before results are evident? Thanks! Lisa

Adequan is great for general arthritic issues and it is virtually risk-free so there is no harm in trying it, except maybe to your pocketbook. The loading dose is important to really see the full benefits. Keep in mind it works on improving joint function and lubrication - it does not help with soft tissue injuries/soreness. For known, less mild arthritic issues in specific joints, a better option would be injections into the joint with a steriod (which addresses inflammation in the joint, which Adequan does not do) or a combination of a steriod and hyaluronic acid (Legend).

I treated my OTTB mare with Adequan last year to good results. She has moderate arthritis in both hocks and one knee, probably from racing. She seemed to get the most benefit directly following the loading dose - moving more comfortably, etc. In my case, the loading dose period was 10 days, I think. Saw results within the two weeks following. For longer-term use my vet has started reccomending "burst" dosing - basically giving a loading-style dose 2x a year, rather than a monthly single injection.
It's pricey, but for us it was worth it.

I think I am gonna call my vet and see about getting 2 of my boys on this. They were both rescued Aug 05 from CBER, Leo has never been reliably sound for more than the briefest of times, and George, I'm afraid is starting to show his age combined with previous hard use as well. In the Adequan site it describes the loading dose 1 shot every 4 days X7 shots-is this what you all do? My understanding is after that it is generally 1x a month?? Researching online ordering once I have my perscription-anyone have reccomendations for fast, reliable source? Thanks again! Lisa

I got mine from my vet back when I used it on Ariel. Had good results and the price for the Adequan IM was much more reasonable than for the Legend (hyaluronic acid) IV injections back then.

That is a good price. I pay $350.
It worked wonders for my 33 year old who had problems getting up (she recently passed away from something completely unrelated). I also use it for my CBER horse Dusty who has back and hip problems.
