hooti - her tail was very matted when she was rescued and the people who originally were fostering her and Cedar for the county (before we took her) cut off their tails.

I have a black fabric braided tail, I'm happy to donate it to Little Miss. I bought it for Ginger, but her tail had grown enough by her first summer, that she didnt need it. It's never been used. I can mail it, please pm me with an address.

Thanks for the help and info. Now when it arrives, I'll have to learn how to braid it in. Maybe my show hunter niece can show me how it's done. Thanks so much!

Today I dragged the big Noble horse feeder out onto the gravel to give it a thorough scrubbing. It was a big, rumbling, super-noisy event. Little Miss cared not a whit. I used the hose and mop to clean it out real good - Little Miss just went on nibbling hay about five feet away, calm as you please, watching as if I was providing entertainment. This girl is just NOT a spooky horse. I was pretty impressed.

Interesting discovery. As her thick winter coat finally sheds out, I have found areas that would be just in front of the girth, that look scarred. Could explain why she isn't crazy about being brushed there, or cinched up.

Daphne came out and did a trim on Little Miss's feet. She was pretty good for it. The backs took a little patience but Daphne got it done. Daphne is great - She really "gets" horses! Another trimming or two from her, and and I'll bet trimming will move into the "no big deal" column for Little Miss. Shekaberry - feel free to come out and ride her - I'm not that far from Julie's place. She could use it - she's gone from skinny to perfect and is quickly heading toward chubby, and exercise is what she needs most now, we think. I have had to cut back the extra calories and now have her just on hay and LMF super supplement.

Little Miss is looking well. Her only physical issue is the condition of her feet. Daphne thinks they will need some time to develop a concave profile, and that work will actually help the side walls to strengthen and grow. Right now Her flat soles bear more weight than they were designed to, and she was ouchy on the gravel of the round pen when Janice lunged her, so we moved her to the grass. The motive of my visit was to get some pictures of her under saddle, but I was not going to get on her when she was so uncomfortable. On the grass, however, the touchiness disappeared, although there was still a touch of earpinning when I asked her to move out, I think this was not a result of discomfort, just a response to perhaps too big a cue. Little Miss is extremely sensitive to body language and quick to move off of pressure. Janice has a nice touch with her, and Little Miss seems settled and happy, in spite of the burdens of leadership (of Janice's mares) that she has shouldered. Under saddle, she is a little rusty, as Allison discovered when she rode her at Edensgate. However she did go where I asked without fuss, if not always elegance, following the cues of body weight better than those of the leg. This makes me think she has had less riding background than Cedar. It could also be that a more proportionate rider might be more comfortable on her and get a more nuanced result. I felt enormous on her! Janice said that she seems to be bothered by the flies. Would that braided tail actually stay in? I was thinking it was the kind of fake tail you use for shows, but on re-reading Gingers-mom Tate's post, it sounds more permanent. Janice was thinking of trying one of the Pyrethrin-impregnated flysheets for Little Miss. It is the no see um type flies that are bugging her under her belly. We tried her in Janice's Western bridle with a brass snaffle with a french link, slobber straps and rope reins. The bit was a little large, or perhaps heavy for her. I trotted her for evaluation purposes - she seemed sound and willing. She was never in as poor a condition as Cedar weight wise, though she could probably use the same slow buildup of work as Cedar because she is not used to carrying weight. She was not tense or cranky under saddle at all and went where ever I asked her to. There was no buck or bolt in any of her responses - the biggest I got was when she did a little bounce when I urged her through a muddy spot she was beginning to balk at - about a 1 out of 10 though. As with any very sensitive horse, a secure seat and a light hand keep her relaxed. Janice says Little Miss is very level headed about most things, but then odd things will make her nervous, like seeing the trailer in a new place! She does tend to be a little herdbound, not when leaving the herd, but when being left behind. We noticed this too at Edensgate. I don't know if this would hold under saddle. Seems like she's actually more relaxed under saddle than on the ground. As Janice pointed out earlier, there is a slight bare patch in the girth area near the elbow that indicates she might have had some bad rubbing there in the past. Janice has worked with her on this issue. Although she did pin her ears at the pad and saddle, she was okay once it was on and I tightened the girth. My jump saddle fit her well enough - she is pretty average in girth size. And she needs some regular work! Someone who was willing to travel a bit could fit both Cedar and Little Miss into their schedule. Julie would be happy to have volunteer come out on a regular basis, particularly if they could help with the other fosters as well (that's Rhythm at the moment) and some chores from time to time. Cedar is really getting into her work. Janice would just be happy to have someone start riding Little Miss, as she posted - just contact her. So Cat, or anyone else who feels comfortable around TB's, it will stop snowing... soon.

I actually had off from work this weekend, but this weather is crazy. One minute it's sunny, one minute it's hailing! She looks adorable - I look forward to taking her for a spin when the weather improves.

Monica - wonderful blog! Wish you could have been here with your camera today - they were so funny! I put a new Bug Blocker Amigo flysheet on Little Miss. Poor Noche was sure a silver tarp had come to life and was walking towards her. I have never seen her move that fast! Rose was right behind her, running and snorting. Little Miss had a big question mark on her face, like, "what? I don't see anything scary? what's the matter with you guys?"
Another new development - Rose and Little Miss crossed the line today from pasture mates to friends. They were doing some mutual grooming - they looked so sweet together!

I also need to apologize about the braided trail, I cannot find it anywhere and my mind has been so preoccupied lately with things at home. I will buy Little Miss a fake tail similiar to the one I misplaced. They are easy to put in and remove, but require the tail to be braided. Sorry again and I know what you mean about someone being comfortable around TB's, It took me one year to feel "safe" around Sione...lol

Hey don't worry about the tail - her new fly sheet covers everything and she is so much more comfortable, I don't think she'll need it. But thanks so much for offering!
