He is BEAUTIFUL, and testimony to what senior horses *should* look like. He is 37 years old?
(He also looks SO bright and thrilled to be having an adventure!)

I just LOVE this cute old guy. He looks pleased as bunch in the photos wearing the saddle. He is what a 37 y/o horse should look like. Well done!

He is absolutely adorable!!! What happened to his poor tail? What a good ol' boy he is, walking so proudly with the little boy on his back!

I'm so bummed!! I had wanted to say hi to Sarge when I was at the show and then I guess I got distracted. I saw him running in a senior class and then I figured I'd go find him later so I could get a good look at him in person, but that didn't happen. He's like a cute little old man, except not so little. When I told my boyfriend he was 37, he figured that must be a mistake because he looked in such good shape!

That Western saddle looks pretty tiny on him. winterlakesfarm... If that body clip helped Sarge last winter, he gets a free one again. You have my Email address (hopefully). Just shout. What a great back on a senior horse. Here's hoping he outlives whoever sent him to the feed lot. I'd clone him. He's one of a kind.

He is absolutely adorable!!! What happened to his poor tail? What a good ol' boy he is, walking so proudly with the little boy on his back! ;D LOL As Drsjunky alluded to- Sarge has WICKED bug allergies. Steve donated his time and clipped poor Sarge for me in an attempt to keep them at bay this Spring and I think it worked!!!!!!! Every winter he grows a mane and a tail and every spring and Summer he rubs them out on anything he can find. All of my trees, posts in the barn, door frames, electrical outlet boxes etc have been rubbed smooth by Sarge. Steve - I think the body clip did help him......he has rubbed but no big raw spots this year! I will be calling in the spring to take you up on your offer! I have tried $250 bug repellent fly sheets, every bug spray known to man, antihistimines, steroids, topicals etc and the only thing that works is Calm Coat shampoo, Calm Coat oil, and Calm Coat fly spray. Those all combined this year worked pretty well. Best of all they are all natural! Thank you all for the kind words.....he had fun that day and I really enjoyed having him with me. If you guys hold the show at the fairgrounds again I will bring him next year!

He's wonderful! I hope *I* look that good at 37! Do you have his story somewhere? If you do, can you point me to it? I'd love to hear Sarge's story and how he came into your life!

I have had Sarge for going on 4 years now. He was on the feedlot in Feb of '06. He was bailed by someone out of state, but had no home to go to. I adopted a little Khemosabi daughter from the feedlot at the same time and took this guy. When he came to me he was a 1.5 on the Henneke scale, literally just hide stretched over bones, he was riddled with lice, 2/3 bald on his body from rain rot(for a long time his nickname was "Scabs the pony") and was ANCIENT. When my vet saw him he said "Oh my God" when he saw his mouth he said "OH MY GOD". The vet guessed at that time he was at least in his early 30's as he had very few molars and no top incisors. At this point he has 2 molars in the way back that meet.....otherwise he is toothless except random molars that do not have ones opposite to chew food with. He gets a big bowl of mushed up beet pulp and hay pellets with cut up apples twice a day. Oh and a few smooshy horse cookies a day too......... I had to quarantine he and the little arab mare away from the other horses when I got them, so they were on a 4 acre pasture on the back of my property. Every morning I expected Sarge to be down and dying but every morning he would neigh out of the pitch black to tell me to hurry it up with his breakfast. He has been neighing at me ever since to tell me to hurry up with his food. Honestly though, I have never had the pleasure of being around a horse that has more of a sheer joy of life. Just last night he was being silly because his dinner was late and was galloping, not cantering but galloping around in his turnout. He has skin issues and last winter his one knee bugged him, but I put some Natural Balance shoes on him this year and they have helped tremendously. Someday father time will catch up to him but for now he is truly a joy to be around. Here are his feed lot pics from feb '06.............
