**MORE INFORMATION PENDING**
Please Note: SAFE is aware that there is a lot of controversy surrounding this mare and her previous situation. SAFE asks that you keep this thread and this bulletin board focused on the care and rehabilitation of this mare and not on the controversy surrounding the individuals who were involved with her previously. Thank you for your cooperation.
Whiskey came to us as an emergency situation late last night, brought to us by Juliane of Serenity Training. Whiskey was purchased from the Yakima feedlot sometime last year as a pregnant mare that was supposedly an ex-bucking horse. She had a filly and was there for some months, and then given to someone who was intending to buck her again. She apparantly did not cut it as a bucking horse, and was promptly dumped back at the feedlot, where she had to be rescued a second time last night.
Juliane is completely over-full at her place so SAFE stepped in and offered to help. She is currently in quarantine at my farm in Monroe. We know very little about her other than she has not had a lot of care in some time, her feet are in poor shape and she is somewhat thin and probably wormy. Other than that, she is a beautiful mare, approximately 15 hands. We have also been told that she is dangerous. We do not know the extent of what that means, what we have witnessed so far is that she is friendly but very pushy on the ground with no manners. She did strike out at Juliane at the feedlot when she tried to pick up her foot, and I have observed that she is food-aggressive. We have been told she has soundness issues in a front foot due to an old injury, although she has moved soundly since she has been here, although she frequently stands a little strangely behind, particularly on her left hind. We have also been told that she may have been bred to a paint stallion.
She does not respect fences, and took down a gate last night at my farm (thankfully, she did not get through the other gates that would have put her in contact with any of my other horses). Juliane came down and with her help, my boyfriend and I were able to run a couple of strands of hot wire around the paddock, which she seems to be respecting so far.
Whiskey has been doubly exposed (first at her previous home, and then again at the feedlot) to a deadly strain of strangles, therefore strict quarantine is currently in effect. We are actively seeking trainers willing to take her on immediately if possible, but if that is not possible then as soon as her quarantine period is complete. It is unknown whether or not she can be rehabilitated as any kind of riding horse, but we are actively seeking a competent professional that is willing to try and work with her.
Here are a few photos Juliane took of Whiskey:
We are currently accepting donations for Whiskey's care and training costs (as well as ANY trainer referrals!). Donations can be made to donate@safehorses.org
