I am so excited. If I get the new job I am applying for, I will be sending SAFE bunches of money to continue her training and find her a wonderful home

The latest: "Whiskey is looking a lot better physically, becoming much more gentle and is much easier with a lot of her lessons. She still is bucking with the saddle but it is getting better, I think that she will make it." In my experience, Bill saying "I think that she will make it" means that she's going to turn out to be a great riding horse.

Any more updates on Whiskey? I know it's only been a week, but I'm kind of impatient

Sorry SL, no - I've been a bit distracted this week. I'll see what I can find out!

Whiskey Update:
I just spoke to Angie and got some updated news about Whiskey as she enters her second month of training:
She is picking up all 4 feet, which is good because she is seeing the farrier tomorrow for a trim!
She continues to be as sound as she was when she arrived. She is getting along better with other horses, but she's just come into a raging heat, so that is no fun.
She is doing better and better with the saddle on, she is still bucking with the 22' lead rope cinched around her belly but she has decided that the saddle is the lesser of two evils, so she's getting used to it. No more striking or squealing from her. She can stand by the mounting block, accept pressure on the saddle, etc so Angie says she's closer to being ready to be ridden.
She is easy to catch, but a pain to halter, as she can be a bit rude and pushy with her head. This is similar to her initial behavior of trying to be dominant and run over people.

I'm sure that graduating from "Uncle Bill's Charm School" will have her acting like a lady with perfect manners. I have sent a filly to Bill & Angie, and recommended many people to them.

The latest from Bill/Angie:
Whiskey is doing pretty well. Got her front feet trimmed, she was so perfect for the farrier, that we decided to wait on the hind feet, just to end on such a positive note. He is supposed to be back this week to finish the job. She is wearing a saddle now, coming up to the mounting block, easy to catch, getting easier to halter(still wants to headbutt sometimes), her weight is excellent, and she has stayed as sound as she can be. I don't think she will ever be 'easy'. She is not the cute, cuddly type. A fairly dominant mare, she will push just about anything around. She has lots of chips on her shoulder about humans. She is really beginning to respond to a softer touch, but you have to be assertive enough to convince her to allow you in close proximity, which is a pretty tall order for most people. All in all, she is in a better place mentally and physically, and I feel hopeful for her continued progress.

The good thing about those pushy, alpha mares is that they are often star performers. Their lack of fear carries over to other things and you can channel that pushy behavior into some kind of high-performance discipline that is a healthy outlet for it.
My 28 year old was a pushy, pushy bad girl in her day. She had flunked out of a jumper barn (jumping: yes...slowing down and rating: no) and wound up in polo where she was a crazy leaping loony when we got her at age 9. (And had also attacked me with her teeth during a period of stall rest due to a wire cut under her previous owner who I had worked for at the time) But she was fixable mentally and remains the toughest mare on earth...went through 7 more years of hard polo plus showing over fences without ever having a tendon issue, never colicked, never had any kind of health crisis except for trying to decapitate herself with a t-post once (learned my lesson about t-post caps on that one), and retired sound. Her pushy demeanor meant that she had no fear about bumping the other polo ponies (a legal maneuver), nor was there a jump on earth she ever looked funny at. Barrels, flowers, moving parts, didn't matter.
If the right person channels a mare like this into something useful, she can be a superstar. The really exciting news is that she is SOUND...remember when the verdict on her was companion-only?

Before Basset, I never liked mares much (I know, I know, I was ignorant!!) - but she was so tough and such a survivor she won me over, and the change in her after her extensive training was stupendous. I am crossing my fingers that Whiskey will have similar results, as she struck me as a very tough survivor-type. And Shelly I couldn't agree more with you about Bill/Ang (and there are a few more trainers I think are eminently competent, too) - they sure have a way of turning them around.

I spoke to her trainer last week and he reports that she is doing very well. Whiskey has put on about 150# and is looking very good. She had her front feet trimmed and will be having her back feet trimmed this week. She is doing less and less bucking with the saddle on her back, and he thinks he will be stepping up onto the stirrup by the first part of this week.
