What about the other horses? And what home is Whiskey's filly going to? I'm sorry if I sound suspicious, but after the last "good home" that was chosen by the previous owner, I am. Is there any way that SAFE could help them too?

Aww...Gala&Herd - Whiskey thanks you!
Whiskey is just hanging out, making mud in my front pasture and turning herself into a mud pit, and relishing every feeding. We are working on plans to get her to Idaho, perhaps as soon as next weekend. Gotta get a Coggins pulled on her first.

gosh she is a pretty girl - she holds herself very proudly - probably has a good mind once life settles down around her and she doesn't have to be pushy and fight for her life. Thanks guys - you are such a wonderful group - I'm always so amazed at the loving efforts - you make it happen again & again & again!

How is Whiskey doing?

She is doing great...scarfing everything I put in front of her and already looking like she has gained some weight back. I have not taken her out and done anything with her at all due to quarantine concerns, but have wormed her using a feed-through ivermectin product. Tomorrow the vet is coming and she is getting her Coggins pulled and vaccinations, and this weekend Jaybird and Cardicorgi are hauling her over to Bill Basham in Idaho to start her training. Despite the old injury and the fact that she frequently rests her left hind, she trots around quite soundly, so I am hopeful that her soundness issues are mild enough that she can at least turn into a nice pleasure/trail horse.

Schwung can fill you/us in on Whiskey's days, but she will be hauled to Full Circle Ranch this weekend... (that's the plan, anyway

Whiskey got her shots and Coggins test today, along with getting her teeth floated, so she is good to go on Saturday to Idaho.
She was easy to catch as she really wanted out of her paddock, but once out immediately started being pushy with her head, trying to rub on me and not respecting me at all. When Hannah started examining her, just touching her neck, back and sides she got very aggressive, she tried to bite, kick and strike. I replaced the rope halter with a regular halter and chain shank and walked her around a bit while Hannah got stuff ready. She seemed to respect the halter fairly well, was leading and stopping nicely, but you could see she was not happy with the process. Out of nowhere she decided to test me and tried to strike me with a front foot. She missed, and got a chance to feel the chain shank on her as we backed up around the driveway. After that episode, neither Hannah nor I were looking forward to putting needles into her. She suggested that we sedate her, and as long as we had her sedated, try to get her teeth done, all her shots, and get a good look at that old front leg injury.
So that left only one needle we had to get in her unsedated, so we put a lip chain on her for that, which was a good thing because I think she might have killed us without it. As it was she still went flying backwards and tried to strike. Bad girl.
Once sedated, she was relatively much better. She did not like the shots and tried to act out, but was too sleepy. In addition to the big hit of tranquilizer she got initially she did require two more hits to keep her sleepy enough to allow the power float, but she got it done. Her teeth had obviously never been done and had some very sharp points, but Hannah said she had very good mouth conformation and her teeth were straight and even. Her estimation on her age is just a little younger than thought, about 10 or 11 years old.
She also palpated that old injury of hers. It is extensive and the scar runs from the knee all the way down to the hoof, but it is old and hard and felt just like scar tissue to her. She does not think it is going to affect her soundness, although we did not do flexions obviously or take the assessment further than that.
She's a nice mare, but not only does she act like a mare that has not had a lot of handling she is also in need of some serious manners. I suspect the handling she has had has been fairly rough, but she is a tough mare and doesn't act fearful - she is probably more apt to fight than flight at this stage. She definately doesn't trust humans at all. She is a lot like Basset was, so I am very hopeful that Bill will bring her around quite quickly. Riding might be a different thing due to her history as a bucker, but since she apparantly wasn't much of a bucker, maybe that will be easy to overcome as well.

I'm glad to hear Whiskey is doing well.
Hopefully Bill will get her over her aggression issues, and she will be a great horse for someone.

I have dealt with several mares that reacted to fear and pain with violence. I haven't met Whiskey, but am willing to bet that with the right management and care she will come around. It sounds like you handled her perfectly for the vet visit and I'm glad to hear that no one got hurt. I can't wait to read her updates.
