I am an artist at heart and love to draw, paint, whatever. So while I was cleaning Whisper's stall two weeks ago out at Jamie's, I got an idea. Hoping someone can direct me as to the best method to handle it.
I am going to do a "portrait" called "Eyes of Love." Basically, it will be an 18x24 canvas panel of a close up of a horse's eye with the reflection of a volunteer's face shown in the horse's eye. My hope is to have the person's face close enough to see tears. I am working on that part in my sketch book before committing it to canvas.
I am planning to draw it in colored pencil and frame it. What I thought then would be to auction it off - maybe on ebay - with all proceeds going to the rescue. Is this acceptable or is there another route that should be taken? Thoughts, comments, concerns, etc. are more than welcome.

What a wonderful idea! And if not the eBay route, perhaps as a raffle of some sort. Whisper has touched so many lives, and at times I've felt that she is here to help "Us." Just the amount of support from the 'general public' is quite staggering. Don't you think that often times the best things/ideas start out as just a "little Whisper."

I love the concept!!! It sounds like a beautiful picture & can't wait to see what it turns into. We've been tossing around an idea for a cocktail party/auction and I was telling jaybird the other day that I think it would be awesome to hold it at a gallery and showcase the work of our very talented SAFE Supporters. I know many of you are well aware of the fantastic photographers we have among us but there are some exceptionally talented artists too. I've had several offers of artwork to be sold or auctioned off to benefit SAFE. Wouldn't it be amazing to hold an art show/cocktail party/auction? A little music....showcasing local equine artists/photographers while raising rescue awareness & raising money for the horses? But back to your project, coleenb, THANK YOU for sharing your idea & love for Whisper & the rest of the horses

I still have a little black dress somewhere for the opening - pairs up beautifully with muck boots!
And I have a drawing that needs finishing...
A group show would be a great idea. Maybe a realtor with some unleased commercial property would be willing to provide a space...

OOOOoooohhh! I know a realtor or 10 I'll see if she/they have any ideas... I'll have to ask the wino that I know (a Jimmy Buffett song reference, btw) if he has a contact or two that might supply *Spirits*too. I'm not sure on the rules as they apply to giving away drinks, wine, etc... but I also understand a banquet permit is not that expensive anyway. I'd LOVE to see this get off the ground and give us an opportunity to celebrate our successes as well. I, for one, am ALL about the party ;D

I love the idea of a show that would showcase photographs, etc! That would be so much fun and a great way to not only raise money, but share everyone's love for caring for these wonderful creatures. I will scan in some of my drawings as examples and keep everyone posted on "Eyes of Love."
PS - I am in marketing and would love to donate time, talent, and material for flyers and the likes if this showcase gets underway.

Another artist who might be approached (he was one of the founders of the law firm where I work, before retiring to devote full time to his art), and has a few beautiful glass sculptures of horses, see pages 1 and 2: www.bennettglassart.com/works.htmJust a thought. If both nonprofessional and professional artists' works might be desired, I would be willing to approach this one.

I got an email about a art auction/show but when i replied i got a failure notice that that other mailbox was full, so anyway my message was that i can help putting up posters or handing out fliers about this event. Also in regard to volunteer scheduals I'm available 2pm or later on Sat. and all day Sun. But back to the art show which sounds really cool I don't know any artists but I'm not afraid to approach people so maybe I can find some as well. Can anyone tell me how the auction works? What i mean is does SAFE just look for donated items from people/businesses or do they also pay for items to put in the auction, maybe at a discounted price?

I had an idea i just wanted to throw out there. What if we found an elementary school class and willing teacher, and told them about Whisper or another horse that needs help, and and had a contest for the kids. They could all make pictures for the contest, and the best one could be put in the art show to raise money for SAFE, and a copy of it could be displayed on the SAFE website. We could also keep in touch with the kids and give them personal updates about the horse's progress. I don't know if any of u had penpals when u were in school, but this could kind of be like that and it would be educational as well. What do u guys think?

Funny you should mention that... I happen to have a pretty nifty little elementary age presentation pretty much all complete and would LOVE to talk to a class about our horses, or Whisper in particular and get them on board with it. It's been one of those little dreams of mine to be able to have a bunch of us out there giving these presentations and having classes adopt a horse for a school year and write the horses letters, draw pictures and then we can put it all together like a baby book when the horse gets adopted into it's forever home to give to the new family I have the script written out for it, in fact I used it for the presentation I did in Olympia last October to the WA State L&I folks and it was well received. If someone has a class room that would like to participate I'm sure I or someone else can go give the presentation.

Hey Jet, my cousin is a 3rd grade teacher in Bellevue (Clyde Hill Elem.) and I'm sure she would just LOVE to have you present to her class!
