I started Juel on the new meds, and five days into it she lost her appetite again, her stomach became very uncomfortable, and she started diarrhea again. I called the vet and stopped the meds, but now her manure is not only like cow pies, but black. Doesn't that mean blood? She's not so uncomfortable now, but she still wants nothing to do with her pellets or beet pulp. I can get her to eat some soaked orchard grass hay, and that's about it.
Is there an alternative low carb pelleted feed that people in this area (PNW) feed besides the Low Carb Sterret pellets?

Hi Lisa, LMF makes a low carb pellet. I swear by LMF products. I have used them since 1988 when they first came out, and have worked in the feed industry off and on since then and have seen the results of LMF Feeds. Where exactly are you located. I can try to refer you to an LMF rep or even Dr. Steve Durhan, who works with Kentucky Equine Research to develop this feed. Please let me know. I'm sure there is something that can be done to help you! Kim

Nutrena also has a low carb product. Be sure to read the labels as sometimes they say low NSC/NFC, but they really aren't that low... Read, read, read.

Juel is not recovering from her diarrhea. The vet had her on flagyl, and I'm now giving her Pepto Bismol (as recommended by another vet), aloe vera, pumpkin, acidophilus. At this point she isn't eating enough to keep herself alive. I've tried LMF, Sterret, regular hay pellets, alfalfa pellets, alfalfa cubes, alfalfa hay, orchard grass hay, even the forbidden senior food just to get her to eat, and she won't.
She had developed raised bumps along her backbone--they can be picked off and leave bare spots, no crust. She looks like a dead horse. I decided to give her until the first of November, but honestly, looking at her last night, I don't think I can wait that long.
I think that today, IR or not, I'm going to let her out to graze.

I am so sorry Lisa. Do your best to make her happy and comfortable in her final days. And try to pick a day when it's nice and sunny to let her go. You did your best and she knows.

I'm so sorry Lisa. What a hard thing. You've certainly done your best with your horse, and watching one suffer is always so difficult. I agree with Buena. She knows you love her and you did your best!

Thank you. She's a member of our family, so we are all taking this hard. I guess I never pictured it ending like this. I made the appointment for 9:00 tomorrow.

Lisa, I know you are hurting, but once Juel is running free, you will hopefully be able to see that you did the right thing b letting her go. You have a PM.
