I ran into Melanie at a horse show over the weekend and of course inquired on Sarah. She is doing wonderfully...apparantly she has decided that she doesn't like the hot weather much, so she just cools herself off in her water trough. Apparantly she gets in there almost every day and just splashes around. Melanie keeps trying to get a picture but she always gets out before she can grab the camera. She promised to keep trying though!

Here's a short update on Sarah. I am going to try to pay her a visit in the next few weeks, as I am not sure how much longer they will be able to keep her comfortable. Sarah is doing ok, not great, but ok. Her weight is good and she is very happy and incredibly grateful, but in a lot of pain. Some days are ok and she runs around with the herd and then some days she just stands around. She is still on Synovi G3, MSM and 12 Naproxin a day and we add bute 2-3 times a week. Even with the pain she hasn't said "I quit" so she is welcome to the bedroom as long as she wants it. The chiropractor from Pilchuck, Dr. Kari DeLeew, came out and gave Sarah a 'tune up'. And she get massages...so overall, I think her life is pretty good. Everybody in the barn plays with her and she gets her own weight in carrots and apples every week!! Gee, can I move into this hotel?!?

She is living an idyllic life, and has been so lucky to have the past two years of that. It's great that she is getting such AAA care, and if that isn't enough, she will still have had probably the best years of her entire life thanks to SAFE.

I went out today and saw the beautiful Miss Sarah today. She is living the life of luxury, that's for sure! And wow, what a change since I last saw this mare, shortly after she arrived at Bedlam Farms. She has such a sparkle in her eye, her eyes are so bright and happy, ears always up, she is treated like royalty and acts like she expects the world to revolve around her. I honestly would never believe this was the same horse, she looks that good! Her stall was deeply bedded, her weight was perfect, her hay green and yummy and outside her stall was a bucket of apples and carrots to keep her well-stocked in treats. Her knee is a mess, and looks much worse than when I saw it last. She stands on it funny - almost bow-legged, but she bears weight on it just fine and gets along really well. Melanie reports she still runs and bucks and plays, although sometimes if she plays too hard she will be sore the next day. They have her on naproxin and a joint supplement, and they are thankful that she has not needed any bute in addition to that since before Thanksgiving. She gets free chiropractic care from Dr. Delew at Pilchuck every few months as well. She and the mare next to her are bonded quite fiercely, they are always together and the other mare was very concerned when we took Sarah out of her stall to brush and clip her and take some photos of her. (yes, Sarah is kept with a neatly clipped bridle path and whiskers - who do you know that clips their companion horses?). Unfortunately, it was windy and rainy outside so I opted for inside photos, which came out a little dark, but you can still see her amazing spirit: Melanie and Sarah: And a few photos of her ugly leg. In addition to her hugely enlarged knee, she has a massive scar that wraps around her upper foreleg, and there is a large muscle that is actually missing, you can tell where the muscle is missing if you look closely (on the inside of the leg). Also, note how Sarah stands on it:

Thanks for the update on Sarah, she has the brightest eyes and appears to be extremely happy in her home. She is one of my all time favorite rescues.

She looks great! I don't clip mine but I do shorten manes because I simply cannot stand the look of a Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred with a long, shaggy mane. Even Sunline has a proper 3-4 inch mane.

An update on Sarah: Sarah is doing unbelievably well. She looks great and her pain level seems to be quite tolerable. She managed to go for a swim in the stock tub a few times this Summer but now she is starting to fuzz up for the colder weather ahead. Her knee continues to get larger but it doesn't seem to cause her any additional pain. The one point of concern is the foot on her bad leg - because she has such an un-natural breakover point she is wearing the hoof wall so short that, ultimately, the lamina will be exposed and she will founder. If she could bend the leg we would put shoes on, but that isn't really an option! So, we just watch it and keep her comfortable and go day by day.

I visited Sarah yesterday. I will send you the site check list soon Jamie, but she's doing good! Her knee isn't any worst than the last photos and she is VERY alert and appears to be happy, curious, and content. And of course, life and Bedlam is just as comfortable for her as always; she really scored:-)

a Sarah update from Melanie at Beldlam Farm!!
Sarah is doing great...she's at least 30 this year and looks PHENOMENAL! Dr. Colton wrote an article on quality of life and managing the older horse and Sarah was one of three horses he used photos of...the others also live with us, but Sarah is the oldest! She is a pretty happy pony; she's on Adequan, Naroxin, MSM and gets touched up by our chiropractor & massage therapist. And she get around just fine! thank you very much.
