Great news on his progress. It's so good to see him comfortable in deep shavings. Any luck contacting the previous owner/trainer yet?

Desert Spark's foster mom here...
I have a lot of new pictures but no time yet to download them from the camera. Between working and soaking and wrapping his abscessed foot and hot-packing his jaw abscess and filling his water bucket and mucking his very wet stall, I am really pressed for time. It's midnight now.
Look for more photos this weekend. He's a sweet boy.

Well, I got a great deal on two new blankets on clearance SLT today. One is a lighter stable blanket and the other is a turnout with a neck on it, so they can be layered. I hope he eventually outgrows them and the one day my 19-mo filly can use them. Better still, they are hunter green so won't clash with Dez's chestnut coat.
A few other notes about Desert Spark:
- He is 16 hands tall, not 17. - He does not recognize apples as food. - He has learned that carrots are food. - He is very good about having his feet handled (farrier was impressed). - He has an old abscess in his left front. - He has some extra front teeth. - He has a drinking problem (almost 20 gallons a day). - He has a big lump between the lower jaws, which may be strangles (EEK!). - He loves to stay in a stall, which is good because he is under quarantine. - My filly can't WAIT to play with him. - My gelding can't WAIT to try and kill him (he won't have that opportunity). - He likes cats. - He likes goats. - He hates horse trailers. - He is not yet familiar with the term "personal space." - Otherwise, he is just a very easy-going, good citizen type of horse.

Thank you for the update Holly!
First of all, I'm actually relieved he is only 16 hands. That makes his weighing in at 875 lbs. a lot less scary sounding.
To fill in the gaps - DS was seen yesterday by a vet and a farrier. He has an abcess in his foot that Holly is soaking, and an abcess under his jaw that she is hotpacking (that may be strangles, but he has no other symptoms). The vet will be coming back to re-evalutate, drain and take a sample if needed Saturday. He also got his Coggins pulled.
As Holly mentioned he is also drinking and peeing a lot. Which can be a sign of kidney problems, so the vet will also be running labwork on him. That will help us evaluate the best course of action as far as feeding him goes.
MANY, MANY thanks to Holly for taking such excellent care of our boy!!

So for your great blanket deals - were the in the store or online? I need to get another one this year.

It actually makes me hurt to look at those photos. He is even more painfully thin than I thought, and I knew he was bad. The poor, poor guy. This one actually does make him look like a walking skeleton: And look at how prominent his hip is...ugh:

Jaime - I had the same reaction. I did not truly understand what horrid condition this boy is in. I also did not realize how many cuts and scrapes he had on him. Holly thank you so much for taking him! I am sure you will be seeing changes in him on an almost daily basis. You are a true blessing.

Holly - you get wings on this one.....and he is only 5 years old? he is still beautiful - look at those eyes, soon his exterior will catch up to his soul. I just don't get it...the how in the world an educated society allows this to happen.......
