That's what she does when you pet her face, she closes her eyes in ecstasy. One of her many adorable personality traits.

She is absolutely beautiful, and very correct. Now see, that is what I think of when I think of a breeding quality mare - conformation and disposition.

Yes, to be honest, if she weren't a rescue, and I was a breeder, she would be absolutely a mare I would breed. In addition to her stunning looks, incredible calm, quiet, sweet, willing, wonderful temperment, she has breathtaking movement! I worked her a bit yesterday, and man, as she gets stronger and fitter...that mare can MOVE! Huge, floating, powerful trot. She's got the best trot out of all my horses - and that includes the 2 warmbloods.

I personally am not 100% opposed to breeding rescues just because I know a very high quality mare like this can slip through the cracks through no fault of their own. Along with a lot of very low quality ones, LOL...although Sunline has no registered foals, she shows signs of having foaled before, which I find...just...horrifying. Love my girl but really, she's the Sam Savitt poster for bad conformation. She just needs arrows and legends. I mean...what is with this butt? That has got to be the weirdest put together butt I've ever seen on a horse. And then there's the straight shoulder and the matched set of post legs...bleah. You know that show What Not To Wear? I think we need to write a book called What Not To Breed. We can illustrate it with pictures of rescue horses!

I like the 'What Not To Breed' idea! Vanna is such a beautiful girl and such a kind temperment, she is worth her weight in gold. You are going to show her at the SAFE show, right Jamie?

So I have been saying for 2 1/2 years that I was going to find out Vanna's identity, and just somehow have never gotten around to it. So here we go! This is what I am pretty sure of for her tattoo: S270 and then the next digit is either a 3, 9, or 8. the last digit is the hardest to read and could be 0, 3, 5, 6, or 8. What do you think?

Hey, Trillium, yoo hoo! She's a good tattoo reader. She figured out the last one!

Ghessh, I think that the people who tatoo horse lips need to do a better job. Hope they don't tatoo people for a side job. LOL

It looks like you can not research Thoroughbred tatoos for free, unlike the Standardbreds. Here is the link to the Jockey Club research area though. www.tjcis.com/otherServicesDisplay.asp?section=3Let us know what you find out. Maybe someone here has access to JC records for free.

Yeah, you can't do it for free with TBs, but when you call you get 3 guesses and you only pay (I think its $35) if they find a match. So, it would be best if I could narrow it down as close as possible, otherwise I'll have to just keep calling back I guess.

Jockey Club is currently researching her tattoo, I'm on hold, I am so excited! I guess they don't have access to marking information though, so we are just looking for a match with a chestnut mare. I wonder how you narrow it down from there?

OK, I don't have an answer yet. She came back with 3 potential matches, all chestnut mares: S27093 S27038 S27080 At this point I have to pick one or purchase all three (at $35-$50 each depending on how much info I want). They do NOT have information on markings so unfortunately, it won't tell me for sure that I picked the right one. The only way I can do that is by contacting her breeder or an old owner, or if she won any races try to locate a win picture from the racetrack (and they may not have them if it was a long time ago). Advice?

That's a good question! You'd have thought they would keep more physical traits on file. Good luck...hope there's a match....it would be so cool to find out more!!
