I wanted to add that this may also be linked to an immune response, I have noticed since I switched Sadie off of all grain (she is only on grass pellets, a little moorglo and Dynamite vitamins - and before the dynamite she was getting a ton of grain to keep her weight) her symptoms all but disappeared. I don't know if it is directly linked but it would make sense...what does he eat?

He is on a modified diet (sort of cushings/low carb)- he is not cushings but has a cresty neck adn looks like he could founder at any moment so I slapped him on a low carb diet. He has no teeth to speak of....literally- like you can hear his and Dally's gums squeaking when they eat ;D But he gets a heaping (2lb dry) scoop of Sterrett Brothers low carb Orchard grass pellets and one heaping scoop Beet Pulp (3lbs dry) soaked into a mash with Equerry's supplement AM and PM and whatever pasture grass they can gum........not much at all.......

JR has kind of a cresty neck, too... Do you think that is more of his conformation or should I maybe consider putting him on that type of diet as well. He can stand to gain a few more pounds, but...?

We're having a bad time with the biting gnats too since we live right on the river. It's interesting that they go after Piney (sorrel) much more than Flick (bay). I've started giving them some apple cider vinegar in grain in the mornings so we'll see if that helps. They haven't been as bad the past few days but that could be coincidence. I think the standard amount is 1/2 cup per day and you could put it on hay or pellets too. Good luck! I'll be out there in the morning with the Skin So Soft too. LOL!

Same thing here...apparently Redmond tastes much better than Chewy...altho - now that I think about it - Redmond is much more reactive to their bites which I think in turn probably attracts more of them because of the fluid that starts seeping out. I just ordered 4 big bottles of Skin So Soft from Ebay...what a nightmare this summer has been...if it's not mud, it's gnats...can't win!!

Kit does too, she has not rubbed herself raw yet but has these big swollen areas on the underside of her neck that look like she's been rubbing and rubbing there, and also has hives. Sarge wants a Belly Dickie! www.elitehorseclothing.com/bellydickie.htmlI want somone else to shell out $200 before I do. lol Though if it works it would be totally worth it. Its horrid to seem them laying on their bellies stratching and rubbing themselves raw. This year is so BAD! Call me a sucker but I just ordered one. Redmond is having a terrible time and now has indicated to me that even the skin so soft is not agreeing with his skin. He is so sensitive - the only thing I have found that I can successfully use is that stuff called The Farmer's Wife Belly Salve. And that stuff is so expensive that over time, it will be more cost effective for me just to buy the belly dickie...sigh....poor guy - I just bought Chewy the fly and gnat sheet from State Line Tack since he has a bigger problem with the biting flies and gets these golf ball sized lumps but CAN tolerate the skin so soft for the underside. ARGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! What a friggin nightmare!
