Raquita crossed the rainbow bridge this morning after a lovely morning spent mowing the lawn and intermittently nudging me for carrots like a human vending machine (nose nudge in gut, carrot magically produced from pocket!). My vet is absolutely wonderful and she went very quickly, although not without demonstrating for one last time what a hot potato OTTB she always was...with enough tranquilizer in her to topple an elephant, she saw the other horses running and managed to whinny, scream and dance. Such a Thoroughbred. Her legs gave out but her spirit never would have. Her registered name was Dynasty Queen and the one time I had an AC meet her, their comment was "She thinks very highly of herself!" Touche. Indeed, she did, and so did I and everybody else who was fortunate to ride her before her cancer forced her retirement. She was one of probably the top 3 polo ponies I've ever played and she had enough personality for ten horses. I am glad I was able to give her the retirement full of green grass and clover that she so richly deserved after many years living in a pipe corral in the dust and heat of Los Angeles. I was worried that her mostly-blind buddy Sunline would flip out upon her passing. Ha. Demonstrating all the loyalty of, say, Paris Hilton, Sunline immediately determined that it was time for a new friend as the old one seemed to be nonfunctioning and is now stuck like glue to Kit, my 22 year old QH mare. Cathy, I am sorry to hear about Raquita. I know how much you loved her. Her spirit lives on in your heart. She will be missed by all who knew her. But she is free from the pain of her cancer now. Take care, Laurie

Cat, you did right by Raquita........right to the end.
thanks from me to you.
Too many people try to hand horses with problems/issues/illness....off to others...hoping to get by the "tough" times. But the tough times are part of real love and committment.......
you know what I mean.

Rest in Peace dear Raquita. Cat, I remember when you called me and told me the wonderful news that Raquita was going to move with you to Oregon. I am so glad that the two of you were able to spend this time together and that she was able to pass over the Rainbow Bridge peacefully and is now no longer able to feel pain. I am so sorry for your loss, but thankful that you were there for her and she for you. You are in my thoughts...I hope Andy gave you an extra kitty headbutt tonight.

Ahhhh Cat.....Quita lived life to the fullest and when the definition of that changed for her you were there. You allowed her the ultimate in dignity to the end, and to be sure allowed her the utmost in care. You and I said she would let you know when she did not have that dignity any longer and she held to her end of the bargain, and as hard as it was I know you held to yours and did not ask her to wait for you. Thank you for being the person you are and my and Quita's lives are better for knowing you. C-

What a wonderful tribute to this mare. You did right by her for sure, even in the end, by letting her go at the exact right time, before she had to suffer or face any loss of dignity by not being able to get up one morning. Many horse owners wouldn't be that brave. RIP Raquita and hugs to you Cat.
