While Chev was on a break from being ridden (I haven't had time to work with her much lately), she managed to strain her superficial flexor tendon in her left front leg, mostly likely while running around like an idiot in the pasture. I noticed she seemed a tad off and there was just a tiny bit of swelling (no heat though), so I had the vet out the next day for an ultrasound of both front tendons. The good news was no rips, tears or holes...the bad news is hand walking only and stall rest for 30 days. I had to cut back her grain to just a handful a day to hide her suppliments in so she isn't energy high-as-a-kite for our hand walks. She's got 15 days to go... She also got her first pair of shoes to help with her tendency to be heel-low and backslung. Her legs already look much better with the shoes on, and I'm lucky to have a farrier with a lot of experience (who also happens to be the farrier for my vet!). Here's a picture I took of her stuffing her face in her stall. Since she can't be on turn-out, this is about as pretty a picture as I could get without a helper. It was getting dark and low light, so please excuse the dingyness. You can see clearly her front leg deformities that likely contributed (if not caused) the tendon strain. Poor girl!

I can't believe i haven't posted on Chev in so long! We both miss Ben terribly...but I think on some level she is enjoying being an only horse. I feel like she's finally blossomed into her non-awkward self (not that she doesn't still have her moments), and looks pretty balanced. Her legs have straightened more than I'd dared hope for and she has not had any more issues with the tendon she bowed May of '09. She has been on turnout all summer during the day. I have taken her as far as I can with training, since she wants to be a WP horse and I know NOTHING about training the all-around Western horse. She is starting with a very good trainer down here named Brittany Boettiger who I have watched work for the last several months. She gets to stay here at the barn and Brittany wants me to be a very active participant in her training, so I will be watching from the sidelines and climbing on often to be learning for myself! I am very excited about this because I have always felt strongly that since she can't be registered, Chev needs all the best education and training she can get to make up for that shortcoming. (The Mudbaby in early Spring, sticking her tongue out) I am so proud of how far she's come and hope she has a long and productive future ahead of her. Of course, she's stuck with me, so I'm in no hurry and want her training to be solid and gentle, as I hope she will be with me for the remainder of her life as Ben was. We are probably looking at a move to Portland in the next year or so (which she and the 3 cats are coming along for)--but that's all still in the works and no plans are solidified yet. Enough talking, on with the pictures! Here she is trying to be a HUS horse for me at a show this Spring: These are all from this summer. She's really filled out and become stocky...on concrete she measures an even honest 16 hands and looks gigantic since she is mostly surrounded by foundation type QHs and POA ponies! Not many people have TBs down here. ;D With her friend Jazz, an appendix QH: She can fly! We'll also be doing a few classes at a show on the 11th. Wish us luck! It's always kinda fun to do well on your home-trained (well, soon to be professionally touched up!), $200 auction horse and show people how good they can be when you give them a chance!
