I call this one getting a taste of the AppyTude!
I have been taking it slow with Miss Priss (Cassie). I try to mix it up every time I go out there to see her. Sometimes she just gets some treats and a brush down out in the pasture, other times just a walk around the arena or a brush down in the cross ties. So she gets the hint that every time I come out doesn't mean she is going to get worked or ridden. She seems to love this set up. She will come great me as I enter her pasture and will quietly ask for a treat but there isn't always one for her, she doesn't pout or beg, she just accepts it as it is. Smile
Today I tried to get out to the barn before it started to rain again for the 100th time. As I went to catch her I noticed she was covered head to toe with dried mud. I rolled my eyes as I told her she isn't supposed to get dirty. I was very impressed with how quietly she walked through the gate because the last time she tried to dart through it. We had to walk past the two nosy geldings. I was sure they were going to try to get her to play with them as we walked through their field. But all was good and Cassie was such a good girl ignoring them and their taunts. Wink She is in love with the scrappy Arab next to her. I guess all this last week she was out there backing up to him and squirting like the little hussie she is. Rolling Eyes
We took a long walk around the arena and let her talk to all the horses that have stalls boarding the arena. She talked to Yoggy the huge black x jumper that loves the ladies! He dangles his hay over the arena wall to coax the little fillies over so he can flirt! Razz But Cassie wasnt to impressed with what he had to say, so over to the cute light gray Arab mares. Not interesting either. Hey wait thats the girl with treats holding my lead. Whats she got. I was interesting! lol So we went to the barn to brush her off and work on standing in the cross ties some more. She has been a bit fearful of the barn as we walk through it so I make her walk real slow and stop alot so she can check it out. This time she walked through it like she has been doing forever. Such a good girl!
But that all ended there. I guess today was the day Cassie decided that she wasnt going to stand still in the cross ties. She usually is very good and will only try to follow me if I have to get something from the tack room. But today she had to walk forward as far as she could until the cross ties were pulling on her halter and then all the way backwards until the lines were tight, then back forwards. Silly girl. I put my hands on my hips and said to her very sternly that she is not being a good girl and that she needs to stop. The look on her face was priceless. She looked at me like a spoiled kid getting their first spanking. The look of shock. She couldn't believe that I was talking to her in that tone of voice. Laughing Laughing
She kept it up though after many corrections on my part. I did manage to braid her tail. It was a mess after her huge mare fest last week.
So off to the round pen like she wanted. I brought the spray bottle with some detangler in it to practice on spraying her mane and body. Oh my was that spray bottle going to eat her! It was the end of the world, I almost had to call the bottle fighting police for her. It just kept following her and making that noise and spraying her with that stuff. Man I dont know what she would have done if I hadnt been there to stop it from eating her! Rolling Eyes Laughing Laughing After I held it against her neck and talked to her for a bit she allowed me to spray her chest, neck and half of her belly before she decided we were done. Legs were out and so was the rest of her.
I also worked on her letting me peel off her callouses on her legs. She could not figure out why I was touching her leg from the wrong side and why I wasnt taking her leg she kept picking up. Wasnt that what I wanted her to do? Or maybe it was a new signal to back up? I did get one of the front ones off and showed her that was all I was doing. She still thought I was crazy for touching the wrong leg on the side of the leg she wanted to be picked up.
We then went to work on stretching her front legs. She thought that felt good.
Then we worked on sending her out on the lead and doing a few circles in both directions. Little Miss Priss was having non of that today. She would turn, face me and toss her head. When I asked her to move she would rear and toss her head in protest. I insisted again and then she moved out but not before I was given the look. I asked her to change directions and again she protested. This time the barn owner and her hubby were standing there watching getting a good laugh at our little argument about weather or not Cassie was going to go in the direction I wanted her to go. I won of course and when she went around me with out a fuss she was rewarded. I then gave in and let her free lounge like she wanted to. But this time she wanted to play games. She would trot really fast around me and when I gave her the signal to stop she would slide to a stop whip around and face me, snort and then toss her head, paw and challenge me to make her move. I moved towards her and she swished her tail and smacked the back of her legs with her braided tail. She kicked out at what had hit her and swished her tail again, it got her again. Man was she mad that something was smacking her in the back of the legs. Kick and then again it hit her. Tons of snorts and looks at me for help. I was on the ground laughing and couldnt help her from the invisible thing smacking her on the back of her legs. I was way to funny. I wish I had a video camera to catch her trying to get the thing hitting her.
After watching her fight with the braid I asked her to move out and she quickly forgot about the thing hitting her tail. She trotted around a bit and then called it a night.
That was the most fun I have had with a horse in a long time. She is such a riot and full of loves. I love her to pieces! I am still working on getting a new girth that is fleece or getting a fleece cover made for my girth so we can get some riding done and get ready for the trial this summer. Cool Sorry no pictures, I forgot I had my phone with me. Next time!
