 Photos & Book update
« Thread Started on Jun 20, 2008, 6:24pm »

Just want to let everyone know that I am going to start listing my photos from the book and of SAFE horses for sale on etsy.com. Here is a link to my shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5291967

100% of the proceeds from these will go to SAFE, it costs me about $10 to produce each one so that means $30 from each print!! Tell your family and friends 8-) They are limited editions, so after I am famous some day, maybe they will be worth lots of money!! ;D

So a little update on the book - the project turned out wonderful... my hand bound book is so beautiful, and I am really, really proud of how it turned out. Here are some pictures (which ironically aren't the best..lol)

However, the book I had printed by Blurb.com just isn't as nice as I had hoped. I will bring it to the garage sale next weekend so those of you there can see it. I think it just doesn't look good enough to cost $80, and that is what the price would have to be. SAFE would only get $5 from every $80 book. So, long story short, I have decided to get it published instead! Which will give me much more control .. but will probably cost more up front. Ultimately the cost would come down though, and quality would go way up. There is a book I saw last night at Barnes & Noble called Human Landscapes - it is the same size and quality that I imagine "Forgotten" ultimately being. High quality printing, really lovely paper.

I've got a few leads for publishing so far. There are still some more people and horses I would like to get into the book, so I suppose this predicament gives me some more time. If anyone else would like to be part of the project, let me know! I really would love to feature as many individual stories as possible. My goal is to be done with the additional stories and photos by July 31st.

Soo...the book is still a while out... but how awesome would it be to have Forgotten for sale at Barnes & Noble?! With a portion of proceeds going to SAFE?! I am hoping that I can find a publisher who will make that happen!

(Anyone on the board publish books????????? ;D)

Leah, obviously the book is going to be amazing. I'm biased but I would think that a publisher would take one look at your finished product and say "Of Course!"

I love the Lost Boys photo, especially knowing the story behind it. You capture their spirits in your photos...that's a talented eye!

The photos are so moving. The "lost boys" is such a haunting image. You are truly gifted.

I like that idea! The next book could be a followup on some of the horses featured and feature new horses in their successful careers after being "Found".

We are planning your career, Leah. :)

Someone I used to work with went into publishing, then one of my former bosses has a brother in publishing, and finally one of my good friends works at William Morris Agency and she might be able to point me in the direction of someone in their publishing department who could give some pointers.

You did this for a school project, right? Would your professor have any local connections?

I got a chance to look at the Book, Forgotten, today at the sale and it brought me to sobbing tears...I'm not kidding! It's beautiful and moving and people at the garage sale must have thought I was absolutely insane (what can bring a person to tears at a garage sale??)...but I was genuinely moved. The photos are simply amazing and when I saw my girl Coconut (omg, I'm getting all choked up again!) it took my breath away.

I can't even bring to words what it means to me to have my horse and our struggle brought to life in your book, Leah. THANK YOU for validating what we've all been through as rescuers and rescuees by helping us celebrate our triumph.

Sometimes you feel all alone as you go through some of the trials of rescue but this books lets us all know we are not alone and our beloved equine friends are certainly NOT forgotten.

I must agree with Coconut's sentiments. The book almost brought me to tears.

I agree too. Keeping fingers crossed that Leah finds a publisher - this is a book that should be published.

Leah, as you talk to publishers I hope you will not hesitate to show them the testimonials...

Shoot, I could see you on book tours and maybe doing appearances at events all over the country with this!

I'm sure that by the 2010 Equestrian Games in Lexington that you could have your own booth signing autographed copies of this book to folks from all over the world.

Dream BIG, Leah....it can happen if you believe it will! AND TELL THOSE PUBLISHERS that *WE* believe in it too! Heck, I'd write you a letter of recommend if it would help! I'm sure everyone who has seen the book would too. You've created something beautiful & meaningful at the same time. That seems like a winning combination to me!!
