My daughter took some pics of Classy while we were out at Jaime's yesterday: She's a pretty girl and was interested in what I was doing with LM in the arena

Classy looks great! I look forward to seeing her under saddle - she was the one who rode really cute after her original rescue if I'm remembering correctly.

Well she got here and immediately got an abcess on her right hind so we've been treating that. She's still as sweet as I remember though!

Oh, that's frustrating. It would be cool to have her ready for the SAFE show. I would like to bring Thai if I can get someone else to ride her. I'd rather just ring steward, but we could really have a huge group of ex-broodmares in the rescue horse classes this year and I think that would be beyond cool (and make for a very good blog entry!) I still encounter people who think they can be "too old" to train or retrain and seeing a half-dozen 15+ ex-broodies out there in a show class would be very enlightening for them.

Well the good news is that Class Act's abcess finally blew. The bad news is it blew out her coronet band, which is not ideal, but at least she's comfortable and happy again! And she got her feet trimmed today.
She is set for the first week of July to get her shots and her teeth done with Dr. Hannah.
I'm feeding her up right now, would like to see a few more pounds on her before we start working her under saddle but will probably start a lunging program with her.

Classy got a bath today! She was SO sweet, she just stood there while we hosed her off, soaped her up, and rinsed her. She hardly even twitched. She's such a sweet mare and she'll be an awesome horse for someone!

Classy got some light lunging on Saturday. We didn't get too much lunging done with her before it became apparent that she was off. At first it looked like her left front, then her left hind, I don't recall the consensus on which side it was. Bummer, because she is so ready for a rider and cute mover.
She knows her voice commands and was very quiet on the line, no bolting or bucking (hopefully not due to her offness). She is herdbound so she was pretty antsy while we were getting her surcingle and bridle on, but she relaxed out in the arena.

I'm pretty sure it was her left hind. I remember watching her and she kept stepping lightly on it. She seemed fine after going back out, though. So maybe it was just cantering that was bugging her.

Yes, left hind. The same one she had the abcess in, and I am hoping that is why she is still limping a bit.

So Dr. Hannah looked at Classy yesterday. She is still very subtly off on her left hind, but was completely non-reactive to hoof testers. She has no heat or swelling so Dr. Hannah feels that given her age we are almost surely dealing with some arthritic issues. In which case, exercise is good for her. We are going to start her on a joint supplement and continue doing light work with her. The current plan is for her to go to a new foster home (with pk from the board) and get some conditioning work and get out on the trails. She still needs to gain some weight and we are working on that - like many TBs that are hard keepers she has a limit as to how much hay she will eat so she's also on Senior, rice bran, Cool Calories, and oil to try and help her gain weight.
I think I also forgot to post that Classy got her teeth done and her shots about two weeks ago. Her teeth were pretty bad - she has a few issues that need to be watched and one tooth fragment that had to be extracted. She was pretty sore afterwards and was on bute for a few days and not wanting any hay at all. She's much better now, and Dr. Hannah rechecked her last night and the remaining tooth fragment is still firmly in place and not loose. She has almost no front top incisors (teeth are at gum level) so I'm sure that limits her effectiveness grazing. But she's a good girl, she's tolerant of most things and I think with more regular work she's going to be fine for light riding.

Since it sounds like Summer is going to be adopted, would you like me to move my MSM donation over to Classy? I'd be happy to get some ordered for her today

It's time to move Classy over to "Available"! We had a wonderful offer from "pk" on our board, aka Kristi, to foster Classy, condition her, and get her out on the trails and see how she does. But before Classy could go out on the trails, she needed a set of shoes. I bet its been close to 20 years since Classy had shoes put on, and she wasn't sure what she thought about the nailing, but she was a very good girl. And once she had her shoes on she was ready to go, and Kristi picked her up on Tuesday morning. I am sure Kristi will be posting updates soon on Classy's new career as a trail horse! (I hope she does well...she is one of those wound-up TB types that stresses a bit. We hadn't ridden her yet but had been lunging her and she did really well with that).

Class Act arrived at our place without incident. She loaded in the trailer fairly well and trailered like a dream. We never even knew there was a horse in there. Classy is a just a tad on the thin side. We put her in a paddock and immediately noticed she just doesn’t eat much. She really seems to like beet pulp in her grain. We’ll try different kinds of hay and see what she likes the best. She is curious and pleasant to be around, but not overly friendly (our other horses are like flies and you can't get them off you in the pasture). Hopefully that will change after we start having some fun together! We were told Classy doesn’t like other horses. However, we noticed she spends a lot of time watching the other horses eat instead of eating her own food. Yesterday we fed her with one of our geldings and she ate well when he was close to her. This morning we turned her out with the two geldings. She had a roll in the sand, checked out the woods, and has been following PK around ever since. He has a nice calming effect over other horses (especially TBs). Hopefully they will make good friends since he is going to Classy’s main trail partner. Here is a pic of this morning in the rain. We’ll start working with her as soon as the rain stops.

Thanks for the pictures Kristi!
I should have said, she only likes "some" horses. She latched on to Annie for some particular reason at my place and was fixated on her, but other horses she HATED. Krabask in particular, she would rush the fenceline if he dared come near it. She hates Scotti too. She's just very picky about her likes and dislikes.
I kept her separated mainly because everyone here is fat and I needed to feed her extra and grain her twice a day to try and put weight on her. You are right, she's picky and doesn't eat enough so getting those extra pounds on her has been tricky. Good luck with that!
