Willow is one of 10 horses seized from a Carnation farm on Saturday, February 23rd, 6 of which were taken in by SAFE. This beautiful Saddlebred mare has a Body Condition Score of 2 on a scale of 1-9. Her and her 4 month old filly, Lily, were living in a severely eaten down pasture where she had resorted to eating holly bushes for nutrition. In addition to being extremely emaciated from lack of food plus the added stress of nursing a growing filly, Willow is suffering from a massive lice infestation, rainrot, internal parasites and hoof neglect. Our main concern with Willow is making sure that she continues to get enough nutrition to support herself as well as any milk that she is still producing for Lily, as weaning Lily when she is this compromised would not be beneficial, so we need to wait until she is stronger and the threat of refeeding syndrome has passed. Willow seems to be recovering well however, has a good attitude and a healthy appetite, so we are quite hopeful that she will make a full recovery. Here are some photos of Willow, taken the day after their arrival at SAFE:

Oh the poor girl. I am glad you did not try to wean the baby now. The stress could be very hard on both of them.

I'll bet it is that baby that has kept her from being as depressed as the black and white mare. She looks like she is very happy about where she has landed with her baby in the head shot. pam

Willow is doing very well. She's eating well, her attitude is good, and she's a very sweet, personable mare. She had her photo taken for the photographer today and was a good girl for that. I like this mare a lot.

Glad she is feeling better. I bet she was happy with all the attention for her "photoshoot"

She's a very beautiful mare in spite of her terrible condition, isn't she?

This lady is going to be gorgeous when her weight gets on and she sheds out. I love her ears!

Willow got a beauty treatment yesterday. She has an enormous quantity of rain rot scabs that are coming off of her now - so even with three of us picking at them for over an hour she was still covered in them - and now the pasture is littered with her hair. She is such a sweet, tolerant mare and continues to do very well.

Both Willow and Hope are absolutely beautiful mares. I will be watching their progress and sending my prayers. And those babies......it's so great to see a look of contentment in their eyes!

Willow is doing so well, I really don't have much to report! She is such a sweet mare, and of course she LOVES me because I bring the FOOD. My only complaint is that I wish she would go in the shelter when it rains so that Lily would go in there with her and get out of the rain instead of hiding her head under mom's blanket for protection.
