"Cedar County Queen" (registered name) is a 13 year old TB mare (foaled 1995) by Hi Mac (Prince D'Morn x Nameless Miss) out of Music Miss (Hi Mac x Princess Grid). (Yes, they bred the sire to his own daughter....yikes). She has no registered TB foals and she was unraced according to Brisnet. She was sticked at 16.3h and is a medium bay with a small star and a tiny snip. This pretty tall mare came in from a neglect situation with 3 other mares. She was the worst of the 4 and seriously emaciated. She is recovering well and has already gained a significant amount of weight. While she is a little leary of people and wary about being caught, she is friendly and once haltered quite easy to handle. She trots soundly, although she does have one bony enlargement on her right front. Her tail and mane where full of burrs and sections of her tail and her forelock were cut (not by SAFE). Currently in foster care in Monroe, WA Adoption fee $600

Aww, what a great ending, these two girls together, getting enough to eat, attention, and with their blankets on. Huge thanks to SAFE and these girls' new foster mom. And to Monicabee!

Queenie will be a show-stopper when she gets cleaned up. I love her milk-chocolate color, when she sheds out she will be gorgeous!

It will be exciting to see what these girls will look like after they shed out and have shiny healthy coats. Probably won't be recognized as the same horses.
Schwung~ where is the Paint mare?

Cedar is a good natured girl. She too has started to look a bit better, although she has got a long way to go. She has no muscle in her butt or in her shoulder and neck - she feels stiff and hard, and moves that way too.
She is learning to lead from the right side, and do a little ground work. She is willing to move off pressure, and does not use her size or weight against you. She just doesn't move her feet particularly well yet - but that may be as much her lack of muscle as anything else.
She loves to be groomed, but I think we have to wait for spring to see what emerges from under that shaggy coat.

I dropped in and visited Cedar, took her blankie off and groomed her. She was unsure of me but relaxed after a bit. She does move stiffly, almost awkward, and was quiet on the ground. She was a little pushy, just needs a refresher in ground manners. She is still thin although she is starting to fill out.
When I approached her in the paddock, she pinned her ears at me. Not aggressivley, just more "leave me alone" than anything. But after a few good rubs and scritches, she was a bit of a love. This lady will be a lovely mount for her special person.

I saw Cedar again on Saturday and spent some time with her. She looks a lot better than she did, barely a hint of ribs anymore! She has a good appetite and is starting to be more interested in people. She enjoyed the good grooming I gave her and the apple treats. Her coat is sooo long I could comb it with a wide toothed comb! She is starting to get shiny and her manners are improving since she has been with Julie at Edensgate Farm.
She is pretty mellow and quiet, so hopefully she will keep that under saddle!

Allison and I went out and worked with the two mares with Julie and Monica yesterday. Cedar looks so much better!! Her weight looks very good - gone is the shelf above her ribs, and you can't see her ribs, although you can still feel them through her very fuzzy winter coat. She looks really good - mostly what she needs now is muscle along her topline - her neck is truly atrocious right now and it makes her look far less attractive than she could, I am sure. She stood like a rock for her beauty session, and the only thing she objected to was, like Little Miss, having her hind feet handled as she still has scratches she is dealing with. She is fine with having her back feet brushed but touching them with a bare hand or trying to pick them up is another thing.
She is still a little more standoffish than Little Miss but is coming around (and it helps that she likes the horse treats Allison bought her!). After her beauty session we took some conformation photos and then put her in the round pen to see how she moves. She is pushy on the ground and definately has been used to using her weight to her advantage, so she needs some work in that area. Julie did some work with her with the flag on the ground and she was very responsive to that. After that she let her go and she trotted and cantered around the round pen. She is a very nice mover, and she wasn't even trying very hard to move out, so I think when she gets fit she is actually going to be a super mover. She also seemed to be completely sound! That was a relief because she seemed rather unsteady on her hind end when she first came, she was very awkward and stiff in her movement. Now she looks great! And while she's rather homely just standing, in motion she is really quite beautiful. I can't wait to see how she looks all shed out!
We didn't saddle her or get on her, but she will be ready soon, I think. Pictures to come!
