In addition to the two mares SAFE has agreed to take for King County (Scarlett and Delilah), there are additionally 2 more mares in SAFE's care from the same farm that SAFE is temporarily caring for. However, SAFE has neither the room nor the finances to care for them beyond another week or two, so King County is actively looking for another place for them to go, as well as a QH stallion (well-mannered, easy to handle) that is currently temporarily being boarded in Yelm but will also need another place to go soon.
These horses have not been surrendered by their owner and are currently in temporary custody of the county, and the county will cover their costs during the 15-day hold period. After that the owner will either need to pay a bond to cover the horse's care or ownership will transfer to the county and the county will want to place them permanently.
The two mares in SAFE's care that need homes ASAP are:
Ruby - 11 year old chestnut QH mare, approx. 15h. BCS of 2, some rain rot and scratches, torn ear, appears sound after paring out of abcess on front foot. Extremely sweet and easy to handle. Palpated for pregnancy and ultrasounded, has fluid in right horn of uterus but no embryo seen, if pregnant not far along. Needs teeth done, feet will be done shortly.
Photos of Ruby:
Rose - 20+ year old chestnut QH mare, approx. 15h, BCS of 1.5. This mare is the thinnest of the group, obviously older and a bit swaybacked but still has plenty of spunk. She has some rain rot but her biggest issue appears to be her feet, which are long and dished in the front and have severe white line separation indicating possible previous laminitic episode. She is lame on the left front and sensitive to hoof testers over the entire foot but is improving. She's extremely sweet and will follow you around begging for attention. Her tail is very short and looks like it has been chewed off, perhaps by a recent foal. She is actively in heat so we did not palpate her for pregnancy.
I do not have pictures of the stallion because he is not in our care, but he is a big, stout liver chestnut QH in relatively good condition compared to the mares, with nice manners and easy to handle. Please, if you can help foster one of these horses or take one on permanently please contact me or winterlakesfarm for more information.
